Candy Diaz, Jack Johnson, Guy Cruz, John Cruz, & Seann Carolという錚々たるメンバーによる”Lilikoi”です。

YouTubeには、ウクレレ1本で演奏している動画もありましたが、やはり大勢で演奏するライブの雰囲気が、この曲には似合います。

“Hi’ilawe”を日本語に和訳します

以前にOhta-San & Herb Ohta Jr.のウクレレデュオのエントリで、”Hi’ilawe”のウクレレ演奏動画をご紹介しましたが、上の動画はJohn Cruz(ジョン・クルーズ)の演奏によるフラ動画です。
女性と男性のペアが楽しそうに踊っています。

さて、今回は”Hi’ilawe”の歌詞を日本語に和訳します。
例によって、英訳はHuapalaから。

まずは曲名のHi`ilaweですが、「持ち上げる」「運ぶ」などの意味の他に、for a famous songと有名な曲として訳の中に紹介がでてきます。
Waipiʻo Valley(ワイピオ渓谷)にあるハワイで最も高い滝の名前「ヒイラヴェ」がタイトルのようです。
フラナビ★ブログに写真がありますが、確かに高い!高さが約300mだそうです。東京タワーが約333mですから、相当なものですね。

【訳注】

★1.Maukeleには、泉の名前や、熱帯雨林といった意味です。
★2.Punaには泉、珊瑚という意味があるので、最初のマウケレは泉の名前なのでしょうか?
★3.Ha`iには浮気者、尻軽といった意味、inakoloには、愛のため息や振動などの意味があります
もう少し際どい歌詞だと思います。
★4.似たような表現が”Sanoe“にもありました。
★5.miulanaは、金香木というモクレン科の花で白やオレンジ色とあります。キンコウボクは強い香りがし、香水の原料にもなっています。
★6.このフレーズもお決まりですね。

分からないなりにも、意外に曲のイメージを掴むことが出来ました。
例によって誤訳はあると思いますが……。

よくハワイアンソングの解説に、「ハワイ語は言葉が少ないから、1つの言葉にたくさんの意味がある」という説明がありますが、訳していてそれを実感しました。
また、ハワイのスタンダード曲には性的な隠喩が多々あるというのも、よく分かります。
昔のハワイアンは、よく噂話に悩まされていたのでしょうか?

何度となくご紹介しているアルバム「Pure Hawaiian」にはGabby Pahinuiの”Hi’ilawe-1972″が収録されていますが、今回は息子さんであるCyril Pahinuiのバージョンを。
